web design - how we build websites
Building a good website is similar to building a house; good planning and foundations are essential otherwise things are almost guaranteed to go wrong!
When we help clients develop or enhance their online strategy we make sure that the following questions are answered:
- Who is your online audience?
At the outset of the project we will use a variety of techniques
to help define and describe your target audience. The target audience
is the purpose of the website and will drive all other aspects of the
website's design.- What information does that audience require?
Put yourself in the shoes of one of your online customers', what will they require from your website?
- Is the content structured logically?
A website which is difficult to use or navigate will lose you potential customers. The
web visitor must be able to answer their key questions within 1 minute
of visiting your site!- Is the website 'standards compliant'?
Web pages are written in a language called HTML and this language, like
all others, has a grammar which must be adhered to. If you break the grammar
rules then you run the risk of people not understanding you - in the online
world this simply means that customers will go to a competitors website.- Is the website 'accessible'?
Accessibility refers to whether a web site can be used by someone who
has a disability. If a web site is designed poorly and with little forethought
for accessibility, it will be difficult if not impossible for a disabled
person to use. It has been a legal requirement for UK websites to be accessible
since 1999.- Is the website optimised for search engines?
Search engines, such as Google, use computer programs called 'spiders'
to automatically read websites and to classify them within their index.
This index is used when someone enters a search request (e.g. "south wales heating specialist").
Poor 'under-the-surface' web design and a lack of knowledge of how to integrate your site properly with search engines will seriously impact how many relevant visitors you receive and, therefore, how many paying customers contact you.
- What is the marketing strategy?
A website should be seen as an extension of your existing marketing
strategy. Jojet can help set up both off-line (e.g. print) and online
marketing strategies to help your website and business grow.
